Thoughts on growth mindset:

I've never heard of the growth mindset prior to this assignment; however, I have come into contact with theories that are related to the concept. My mother has always taught me the importance of perseverance– it was interesting to learn about the psychological influences of the growth mindset, and the active effects it has in learning development. In my schoolwork, it has always discouraged me when other students seemed to be naturally more intelligent than me. I tend to parcel away several days to complete a longer essay, but many of my classmates can knock out a 12 page paper in a single day-long writing session. Our grades come out the same. Despite these occasional frustrations, I recognize the importance of knowing that I can become more intelligent through concentrated effort. The brain isn't a finite resource; it isn't expended by great strain. It grows stronger, like a muscle. I respect Carol Dweck's emphasis on effort, especially whenever great emphasis is placed on natural ability in much literature and film. The turtle can be just as effective or even more effective as the hare under many circumstances. Making learning a actual, tangible goal is truly crucial in gaining higher achievement.
